How I figured out I am a Portrait Photographer

Hey so I thought I would pop on here to talk about why I focus on people in my photography and how I figured out that I am, at heart, a documentary wedding and family photographer (www.freckleandwild.com) AND a portrait photographer - the heart of all this is…people.

When I first got a camera, I practised on flowers, the swan in the local park and landscape type things but got bored quickly and soon turned the camera on myself. I learnt about shadows, light, movement, and angles by doing self-portraits.

When I took my camera out, especially on trips home to Zimbabwe where my thoughts were - Yes! landscape photography! yes! wildlife photography! Ooh yes! macro photography of all those awesome bugs. Do not get me wrong I photographed those things and I enjoyed them - but it quickly became all about portraits and people for me. When I asked someone if I could photograph them and they said yes, I experienced a thrill - a buzz of excitement that no other photography had given me.

I found I could bring out emotions just from chatting to people and making them comfortable. I realised I had a knack for photographing them just at that one moment, when they’re being their most authentic selves. If this moment comes in a moment when the light is perfect, magic is made.

So, when I launched my business and thought about what service I would offer, I knew I wanted to work with people. Being a portrait photographer is 100% my jam. What is more so my jam is helping people, particularly small business owners show their awesome selves in their brands and boost their brand by providing authentic and powerful content.

I am going to share some of my portraits here, from my adventures back home in Zimbabwe as these portraits were, in essence, what fuelled me to become a portrait photographer and a personal branding photographer. Headshots with a difference!
